Monday Listening: Prescott Perez-Fox on Life In The Woods podcast

If you’re starved for some listening this week — as you wait for the next episode of The Busy Creator — check out Life In The Woods podcast hosted by Blake Stratton. I was a guest on a recent episode in which we discuss design, business, being independent. It’s a little different than what you’ve heard so far on The Busy Creator, a much more philosophical approach which tends to bend and wind in strange directions.

Blake is a good dude so subscribe to his show and send some networking love his way. […] Full post →

On Waking Up Early

I’ve been hearing more and more from independent creatives and conventional workers alike that waking up early is a necessary habit for productivity. Since the start of the year, I’ve adopted the practice myself, mainly for going to the gym and even catching up on household recreation (read, watch tv, etc.) that most people do at night.

A recent article on Medium expands upon the virtues of waking up early. The author Matt Donovan (@mattdonovan) showcases the process of his installing this habit, and what it’s already earned him. […] Full post →

Is Microsoft Office for iPad a useful tool? Or too little too late?

Office for iPad

Microsoft Office for iPad

Microsoft has released their popular Office suite of applications for the iPad, a sloppy four years after the launch of the popular tablet. Many users have been waiting since day 1 for basic Office capabilities, even if only to read documents on the go.

As an iPad owner, this means absolutely nothing to me.

I avoid Office as much as I can and as I type this, I don’t actually have it installed on this computer. Instead, I type in basic formatted text using Bean, use Numbers to track my household spending, and create presentations as simple PDF files, usually from InDesign. […] Full post →

The Original Inbox Zero

Many of us are familiar with the term Inbox Zero, but a recent post on Google+ reminded me of the source. It all comes from Merlin Mann and his writings from years ago. Here’s a video from 2007 which still holds true.

I personally don’t remove items from my inbox, but instead use filters and colour-coded category names to sort everything. Nothing is left unread and uncategorised. […] Full post →

11 Productivity Tips You Can Use Today

From Fast Company comes a snappy little article about productivity — creative or otherwise. Some of these you’re probably already doing, but otherwise, take a quick look and get busy. My favorite is perhaps the toughest one to implement, and one that I am rather trying to adopt myself.

“The promises we make to ourselves are easy to break,” says Laura Vanderkam, frequent contributor and author What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast. “It’s much harder to call a friend on Friday and inform her that ‘I failed.’” She set up weekly check-ins and which kept her motivated to complete the first draft of a novel in 2013.

SimpleCal 2014

All calendars suck. This is due in large part to their inability to see how the months stitch together. Often, the final days are crammed onto the same last row as the previous week. And what happens in a fortnight? Who knows.

A few years ago, I created for myself a simple calendar, which I’ve been updating ever since. Creatively, I named it SimpleCal. It features a seven-week view of each month, with weekends grouped on the right side, and shaded out to emphasize the working week. […] Full post →
